Both of these schemes have been refreshed with the advent of the GP Forward View. The Induction and Refresher Scheme has been streamlined and now has a dedicated unit to help practitioners return to practice after a career break. They have a dedicated website which is linked below.
The Retainers scheme has also been refreshed and the criteria to apply are now wider than before and there is increased support for the practitioner and the practice. This scheme allows increased flexibility and educational supervision for the doctor which may be for a number of reasons – caring responsibilities, personal illness, approaching retirements or other roles.

Are you a GP who is five or more years into your career? Whether you’re currently practising, on a break, or considering your next step – the programme is for you.
What is GP Careers Plus?
A fully funded, peer-supported development programme designed to help GPs explore their next chapter. You’ll join a small group of peers for guided sessions that offer space to reflect, build conference, and reconnect with what matters most.
Programme Features:
- 10 x Friday sessions over 12 months
- In-person in Langport, Somerset
- Small cohort: maximum 10 GPs
- Follow-up sessions 3 months after completion
- Facilitated by experienced coaches from primary care
Fully Funded:
£300 per session backfill payment to practices (or directly to locums)
